Safe drinking water supply and arsenic removal in Mexico

Arsenic in drinking water is a serious health risk in many regions of Mexico. Elevated arsenic concentrations are particularly common in rural areas where groundwater is the main source of drinking water.

As experts in arsenic removal and manufacturers of the adsorption material GEH® (granular ferric hydroxide), we have been committed to safe drinking water worldwide for many years. This year, GEH Wasserchemie will be exhibiting at Aquatech Mexico in Mexico City for the first time. Together with our partner Zeomex, we will be presenting modern solutions for arsenic removal in water treatment.

Why arsenic in drinking water is a problem – especially in Mexico

In many regions of Mexico, especially in the north and centre of the country, the groundwater is naturally contaminated with arsenic. This is due to geological conditions, such as volcanic rock layers from which arsenic dissolves into the groundwater.

Numerous studies and health reports show that millions of people in Mexico are exposed to arsenic in their drinking water every day, often without knowing it. Long-term exposure to arsenic can have serious health consequences, including cancer, skin changes, cardiovascular disease and neurological damage.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Mexican standard (NOM-127-SSA1) recommend a maximum limit of 10 µg/l of arsenic in drinking water – a value that is significantly exceeded in many wells.

GEH® – efficient arsenic removal through adsorption on granular ferric hydroxide

With GEH®, our highly effective adsorption material made of granular ferric hydroxide, we offer a reliable solution for removing arsenic from drinking water that is already in use in over 60 countries worldwide. A GEH plant is already being used successfully in several projects in Mexico.

GEH® works according to a simple but effective principle: The iron hydroxide selectively binds arsenic (both arsenate and arsenite) and thus permanently removes it from the water. The material is chemically stable, certified for drinking water (including NSF/ANSI 61) and can be used in centralised and decentralised treatment systems – ideal for rural communities in Mexico, where large infrastructure is often lacking.

Aquatech Mexico 2025 – we'll be there!

Aquatech Mexico, Latin America's leading water trade fair, will take place from 3 to 5 September 2025 at the Centro Banamex in Mexico City. We look forward to presenting our solutions for arsenic removal, water treatment and sustainable drinking water supply together with Zeomex.
