Reduction of arsenic in Nizza di Sicilia

Arsenreduktion im Trinkwasser in Nizza di Sicilia

After 275 days without drinkable tap water, a new arsenic removal plant was successfully commissioned in the Sicilian municipality of Nizza di Sicilia. The plant was built by our partner Grundfos and equipped with our GEH® 102 adsorption material. As a result, arsenic levels are now well below the limit value and the population can finally enjoy safe drinking water again.

Safe drinking water supply in Nizza di Sicilia thanks to GEH®

After many months of restrictions, the Sicilian municipality of Nizza di Sicilia now has a secure drinking water supply. This is thanks to the successful commissioning of a new arsenic removal plant equipped with our GEH® 102 adsorption material.

Problem solved after nine months without safe drinking water

For almost 275 days, the municipality's tap water was contaminated with arsenic and exceeded the permissible limits. During this time, residents had to resort to alternative supplies – an enormous burden on everyday life. With the completion and commissioning of the new treatment plant, this problem has now been permanently solved.

What technology was used for arsenic removal?

The system, built by our partner Grundfos, consists of two parallel adsorption filters. Thanks to the installation of modern fittings, operation, including backwashing cycles, is fully automated. The two GEH® adsorption filters are fed with contaminated well water, after which the arsenic-free water flows into the elevated tank. The two filters ensure reliable arsenic removal from the raw water, so that the levels are well below the legal limits.

The new water analyses confirm that the concentration of arsenic in the drinking water is now below 0.5 µg/L – well below the Italian limit of 10 µg/L. This means that the water is once again approved for all uses.

Working together to ensure clean water

We at GEH Wasserchemie are delighted that our product GEH® 102 has been able to make a decisive contribution to this success. We would like to express our special thanks to our partner Grundfos for their excellent cooperation in planning and implementing this project. For the residents of Nizza di Sicilia, the new plant means a return to quality of life: safe drinking water straight from the tap. At the same time, the project demonstrates the importance of sustainable solutions for the treatment of water resources – especially in areas where limit values are exceeded, affecting the health and confidence of the population. With GEH®, we contribute to safe drinking water worldwide – reliably, sustainably and in partnership. Find out more about GEH system consultation and benefit from clean drinking water.
